After a greatly enjoyable and successful conference in Cairns, the TASA Executive now has to reorient itself to the activities of 2016 (of which there are many!).
The TASA 2016 Conference
The 2016 TASA Conference will be held at the Australian Catholic University, Melbourne, from 28 November to 01 December. The conference theme is ‘Cities and Successful Societies’ and the keynote speakers and plenary sessions will be structured accordingly. We have in principle agreement from keynote speakers Michele Lamont (Harvard), Sujatha Fernandez (CUNY/Sydney) and Bryan Turner (CUNY/ACU). There will be plenary panels on cities, asylum seekers and cities, violence and religion. The Local Organizing Committee led very capably by Associate Professor Mark Chou will shortly issue a call for papers.
The TASA 2016 Executive Election
Members will have their chance to vote for a new Executive in mid-2016. Elections are held every two years and offer the opportunity for fresh faces and new ideas to move onto the Executive and to ensure that TASA retains a direct link with its members. There is a significant amount of work associated with each portfolio that goes on behind the scenes and offers you the opportunity to contribute to shaping Australian Sociology. The call for nominations will appear in the weekly e-newsletter for the following positions:
- Postgraduate Portfolio Leader
- Ordinary member – Thematic Group Portfolio Leader
- Ordinary member – Public Engagement Portfolio Leader
- Ordinary member – Multimedia Portfolio Leader
As explained in the President’s Report, subject to the agreement of members, nominations will also be called for a new Executive portfolio position with responsibility for members in diverse workplaces.
We strongly encourage you to consider contesting the election in a position that is of interest to you.
